Beef Tallow's Beauty Benefits

Beef tallow is derived from the fat of cattle, and it is well known for its moisturizing and nourishing properties making it an ideal ingredient to use in lip balms, hand balms, and other skincare products. It has been out of favor for many years, but it is having a resurgence and for good reason.

One of the primary reasons we use beef tallow is its high concentration of vitamins A, D, E, and K. These vitamins are essential for healthy skin by helping to nourish and moisturize the skin:

  • Vitamin A: It thickens and stimulates the dermis, which is the middle layer of your skin where collagen, elastin, and blood vessels are located, reducing wrinkles and increasing blood flow to the surface of the skin. It also increases the deposition of collagen, which slows down the normal aging processes in your skin.

  • Vitamin D: Its benefits are summed up nicely in this quote from Dr. Sadick from Sadick Dermatology Manhattan, NY:

“The main benefits of topical vitamin D lie in its anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidative, proliferative, and skin repairing properties.”
  • Vitamin E: It is an antioxidant that combats free-radical damage and is a hydrating molecule that works as both a humectant and emollient. Vitamin E is also a natural anti-inflammatory that can be soothing and help calm the skin.

  • Vitamin K: There are reported claims of reducing dark circles under the eyes, but there has been mixed research results on this. However, there is conclusive research showing aiding in the speed of wound healing.

We use tallow from grass-fed cows due to the higher content of these vitamins and antioxidants as shown in several studies. Beef tallow is also high in triglycerides which are an effective emollient, which means that it helps to lock in moisture and keep the skin hydrated.

In summary, beef tallow adds numerous benefits to skincare products, and we encourage you to try it out!
